On November 24, 2023, 8 students of the Ecology and Geobotany subjects of the Degree in Forestry and Natural Environment Engineering of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) taught at the ETSI Agronomic and Forestry and Biotechnology Albacete, attended a knowledge dissemination and transfer seminar within the framework of the LIFE ADAPT-ALEPPO project (LIFE20 CCA/ES/001809).
Yeste municipality (Albacete) in areas burned by the fires of 1994 and 2017, where students worked on concepts of fire ecology and post-fire restoration , led by Daniel Moya (Full Professor at UCLM and researcher of the ECOFOR group linked to the Botanical Institute of Albacete) and Pablo Ferrandis (Professor at UCLM and Director of the Botanical Garden of Castilla-La Mancha).
The adaptive management techniques that are being carried out in the area for the post-fire regeneration of the Aleppo pine were shown and a technical debate was generated on the effects on the plant-soil interface derived from the execution of the measures proposed in the project. .
With the development of this activity aimed at future professionals in the forestry and environmental sector, the aim is to:
- Raise awareness about the foreseeable effects of the change in climatic conditions and how they will affect the forests of the Mediterranean region.
- Promote concern to prevent the disappearance of forest masses and the ecosystem services and functions associated with them.
- Strengthen strategies and the use of the best available knowledge in intervention strategies to stop climate change
