Significant progress has been achieved in line with the stated goals, after two years of dedicated development for the LIFE Adapt-aleppo project.

We have made significant strides in developing an initial version of a tool designed to detect declining Aleppo pine forests at an early stage. Furthermore, the majority of the planned measures to present forest management techniques for enhancing stand conditions have been successfully executed.Their adaptation to climate change.

Some of the advances achieved are:

  • Action A1: There is a database of previous experiences developed in Spanish territory on the techniques and tools of adaptive forest management to be applied in the context of the Pinus habitat halepensis , as well as a summary document that collects and describes the Technical and Regulatory Bases for the implementation of the specific actions of the LIFE ADAPT-ALEPPO project.

There are some previous experiences of adaptive forestry in the context of the Pinus halepensis habitat that, with adequate monitoring, can provide us with valuable information for the future management of these pine forests.

The LIFE Adapt-aleppo project will contribute to updating and developing certain technical and regulatory bases that are already advanced in some aspects but require improvements in others.

  • Action A2: 42 demonstrative stands have been selected to be carried out in actions C2 to C5, as well as their initial characterization.

There is a large area of Pinus halepensis forests that need adaptive forest management, and the demonstration stands proposed by LIFE Adapt-aleppo will be very useful as a practical example or reference

  • Action C1: New methodologies have been applied to map the habitat suitability of Pinus halepensis forests in the context of climate change and to monitor the forest decline processes that take place in these forests as a consequence of climate change.

We have developed an initial version of the web tool for visualization and consultation. You can access it at https://lifeadaptaleppo.agrestaweb.org/. We are committed to further improving and augmenting our cartographic products as part of action D1.

  • Action C2: We have successfully implemented Action C2 by introducing various strains of Aleppo pine to six demonstration sites, covering a total area of 11.97 hectares. This achievement represents an impressive 50% of our initial target. Work is currently underway to prepare the implementation work for the rest of the stands, which will take place during autumn 2023 – spring 2024.

.

  • Action C3: We have successfully implemented eco-hydrological management techniques for Aleppo pine stands in four areas, covering a total of 27.68 hectares, which is halfway to our target stands.
  • Action C4: Silvicultural actions have been developed for floristic and structural diversification of Aleppo pine stands in 11 stands (95% of the planned stands) and 57.64 ha.
  • Action C5: In order to effectively manage post-fire regeneration in Aleppo pine stands, silvicultural actions have been implemented across eight designated areas totaling 34.11 hectares.

We are making great strides in implementing our demonstrative work, closely monitoring the progress of the stands that have already been completed. Our aim is to generate valuable insights for stand management and facilitate their effective adaptation to the challenges presented by climate change.

Moreover, the project actively engages in a variety of conferences and gatherings, where it showcases its objectives and establishes connections with other projects that share a common goal of addressing climate change through mass adaptation measures.

In addition, work sessions and conferences are organized for the transfer and replicability of the methodologies used.
