With the aim of involving interest groups in governance matters (actors related to forest management in the Mediterranean context), on Wednesday, April 17, a field trip was organized with technicians from the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Climate Action of the Autonomous Community Region of Murcia. Thus, the coordinator of the LIFE ADAPT-ALEPPO (Natural Environment Engineering – IDEN) showed in situ and explained in detail the demonstration experiences developed for mass management with the main objective of their adaptation to climate change.

Firstly, the assisted migration plot located in Serrata del Puerto (Calasparra) was visited, where the origins and planting system implemented were explained, as well as the analysis of the first survival results.

In addition, it was shown how other data of interest are taken during the monitoring of the plantations, such as soil moisture.

Next, attendees traveled to the stand of silvicultural treatments to improve floristic diversity located in Las Atalayas (Cieza).

There, the methodology of action was explained, with special emphasis on the methodology of action, seeking to favor the presence and good development of companion species of interest. This new concept of forestry is insisted on, as a measure of adaptation of the stands to climate change, in order to make the idea permeate the technical managers of forest stands so that this methodology can be replicated in future management projects.

Finally, the methodology used to monitor these stands is explained, both of the Aleppo pine stands (evaluation of heights, diameters, FCC and fruiting), and of scrub, using the mesh and nodes method (in each node point is made, sampling of the bush is done if it coincides within a radius of 20 centimeters on the surface and choosing the dominant bush if several coincide in the same node and this bush is measured for height, FCC, flowering or fruiting, mass index leaf and dead biomass ratio).

The development of this work session contributes to the objective of transferring the techniques and tools implemented to the main actors involved in governance and managers of forest masses, in order to improve the management and long-term conservation of the Aleppo pine habitat. and combine proposals that bring us closer to the adaptation of forest masses to climate change.
